Who is the Greatest American Rock Band

This article is inspired by a YouTube post by the great rock and prog content creator Andy Edwards ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wmdEZcLDQnQ&t=1923s ). There is a strange phenomena in the world of rock and roll. Rock is a quintessentially American music form, yet if were asked to name a top 10 of all time rock bands, 8 of them are probably British. Why is this? I think it has to do with Elvis. Elvis, the first rock star, was a solo artist and celebrity even though his early band was highly influential. This kind of set the tone for the future. To me, Bob Dylan is right up there with the Beatles in his importance to rock, but he was a solo artist. As was Jimi Hendrix, Bruce Springsteen, Stevie Ray Vaughn or any number of artists that were actually bands. They all had long term bands they played with that even had names (Experience, E-Street Band, Double Trouble) but they are considered solo artists. What is left is bands who most likely do not have a star famous enough to ...

Top 5 Reasons online dating is hard for men

How is it possible to be so incredibly unsuccessful at online dating when you are a reasonably good looking professional who is neat and has all of their teeth? Shall I list the reasons? That is a rhetorical question because I am listing them anyway. Women want to know the reason you caused the divorce — There is this strange phenomena when dating someone you met online where they absolutely grill you about the reasons for your divorce in minute detail. Yet they somehow never mention theirs. I found one lady had been married 5 times! Another had two husbands leave due to infidelity! Yet both those things were mentioned only as an aside. The absolute irony is that 70% of divorces are initiated by the woman. And that is not just in their relationships with men. Lesbian couples have a far higher divorce rate than gay men. This is not saying that I did not cause my divorce, just that it is an unequal battle when dating. Women date up — I rarely get a like or match from a woman my own age. ...

I Eat Alone

Image
I want to use this page as a running blog about how to cook and eat healthy even if your circumstances are not ideal. I was recently divorced after 31 years of marriage due to circumstances that had much to do with undiagnosed ADHD and my inability to deal with past trauma. In my marriage, my wife was a fabulous cook, so I mostly did dishes and grilled occasionally. When tasked with providing a full meal it was always a frantic experience. Of course the home we shared had a full kitchen with all of the modern kitchen conveniences. Post divorce I lived for a while with an acquaintance who was so poor at kitchen hygine that I cooked outdoors with a grill and camp-stove almost exclusively. That set up was not the best for generating regular meals so I ate out of the microwave quite frequently. Next, I lived for a short while in a trailer that had a nice stove and oven. I cooked regular meals there, but it was not a permanent residence by any means. Now, I live in a wonderful basemen...

My Favorite History on You Tube

I refuse to pay for cable television. As a by-product of that aversion, I tend to watch some You Tube channels. Here are high quality channels I belive are actually better than what you see on cable. Especially better than the History Channel which ironically has almost no history. Forgotten Weapons  ( https://www.youtube.com/@ForgottenWeapons ) — I list this channel under history because of the way the subject is approached. Ian is a wonderful host. Although you can tell he loves guns, he is not some 2nd amendment freak. He thoroughly covers the mechanics of each weapon and what makes it special. Then he will usually tear the weapon down or show some time on the range. The channel is entertaining and informative. The Rest is History  ( https://www.youtube.com/@restishistorypod ) — This channel is in depth analysis and discussion of a historical subject from the viewpoint of two English historians Tom Holland & Dominic Sandbrook, two quite knowledgeable but differen...

Top 10 Spike Lee Movies

Spike Lee: Mars Blackmon, Mega-Knick fan, Political lightning rod … yes, but do we properly remember that his filmography rivals all of the great modern directors. He is right up there with Paul Thomas Anderson, the Coen brothers, Spielberg (maybe not Spielberg), but he has had some great and underrated films. These are only Spike Lee films that I have watched so I may have some holes. Malcolm X — This was not just a film for Spike Lee, but a labor of love and indeed his masterpiece. Denzel Washington’s performance is so good you have a hard time differentiating the film from historical footage. This film was important in re-shaping the story Malcolm X in the publics eye in a way similar to what the musical Hamilton did for Alexander Hamilton. The film is definitely long, and gets dreary towards the end, but that mirrors his life. So here is the deal, with Spielberg you have Saving Private Ryan and Schindler’s List, those are great films. But I never re-watch them. But I can and ...

Top 10 Dystopian Novels

Absolute at Large — I picked this one up at random and could not put it down. It is a tale of unintended consequences. What you think should solve every problem can sometimes be a downfall in disguise. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? Philip K. Dick is the hands down master of dystopia. Blade Runner is based of this novel, but it really only took some of the plot, a couple of characters, and the overall feel of it. Mercer, and his endless battle with rocks is missing, as well as serious questioning of religion and consumerism are all missing. As much as I love the movie, the book is even better. The Stand — Stephen King’s opus about a bio-engineered flu that wipes out 90% of the US population and divides the rest into two camps, one centered on Las Vegas (the evil ones) and one in Boulder, CO (the good ones). None of the filmed adaptations seem to be able to get it all of the way through, but the book is massive and enthralling. The Road — Cormac McCarthy is probably my favor...
