My Favorite History on You Tube
I refuse to pay for cable television. As a by-product of that aversion, I tend to watch some You Tube channels. Here are high quality channels I belive are actually better than what you see on cable. Especially better than the History Channel which ironically has almost no history.
Forgotten Weapons (https://www.youtube.com/@ForgottenWeapons) — I list this channel under history because of the way the subject is approached. Ian is a wonderful host. Although you can tell he loves guns, he is not some 2nd amendment freak. He thoroughly covers the mechanics of each weapon and what makes it special. Then he will usually tear the weapon down or show some time on the range. The channel is entertaining and informative.
The Rest is History (https://www.youtube.com/@restishistorypod) — This channel is in depth analysis and discussion of a historical subject from the viewpoint of two English historians Tom Holland & Dominic Sandbrook, two quite knowledgeable but different people. The interplay between the two hosts is highly entertaining, but it never devolves into one-upmanship and the focus is always maintained on the subject.
Greg’s Airplanes and Automobiles (https://www.youtube.com/@GregsAirplanesandAutomobiles) — Don’t let the title fool you, you are going to get detailed analysis of WW2 aircraft. Mostly American, but all countries are covered. This is very thorough analysis of the history and mechanical details of these aircraft done in a way only someone who really loves the subject could.
Atun-Shei Films (https://www.youtube.com/@AtunSheiFilms) — History with humor and a specific focus on the Civil War but veering into other topics as well. He does recurring characters from a time frame to teach history.
The Chieftan’s Hatch (https://www.youtube.com/@TheChieftainsHatch) — Nicholas Moran (aka The Chieftan) is an actual officer in the US Army but he is also Irish. You will get a walk-around of various tanks he see’s while visiting museums and armories around the world. He also has in depth knowledge on doctrine.
Crecganford (https://www.youtube.com/@Crecganford) — This channels covers myths and how they are studied academically. The host is Jon F White, a burly kind of guy who you might not suspect to be an academic. He starts each episode by inviting his guests to grab a cup of tea and enjoy. You will get deep and heavy analysis of myths here with excellent quality.
Bart D. Ehrman (https://www.youtube.com/@bartdehrman) — New Testament religious studies from the famous professor at UNC — Chapel Hill. I am sure he gets a ton of grief, but he is not an atheist (agnostic though for sure) and actually studies the new testament with care and love. But it is an academic and disciplined approach not based on belief.
Gutsick Gibbon (https://www.youtube.com/@GutsickGibbon) — Ok it is a stretch to call Ericka’s channel history. It is anthropology mainly with an occasional forray into de-bunking new earth creationism. I can’t stress how excellent these presentations are. She did one episode on the relationship between Dog’s and Humans that was just phenomenal.
